The Area
The Times declared Pelion one of the best five destinations in southern Europe for 2004 and 2005. In 2006 the survey was modified or ceased.
The largest town close to Pelion is Volos, an attractive and lively town with all amenities and hospitals, off the main motorway between Athens and Thessaloniki, the largest Greek cities.
The village of Kala Nera is situated 18 km south-east of Volos, on the shores of Pagasitic gulf, and is inhabited throughout the year. It boasts a long beach lined with trees, restaurants and cafes, and beautiful sunsets. Various websites with information on the village and photographs exist.
Homer extolled the beauties of Pelion, the pride of mountains according to another poet. It is blessed with fine and varied scenery, nice beaches and extensively diverse vegetation. The picturesque villages have a unique architectural style and many of the sumptuous mansions are protected by heritage laws. Pelion offers excellent walking and hiking, cycling and horse-riding opportunities, in addition to all activities related with the sea, such as fishing, sailing and water-skiing. In winter, it also offers good skiing at the Chania resort.
Pelion is close to most attractions of central Greece, such as Meteora and the Sporades islands with the marine park, a sanctuary for rare birds and the mediterranean seal.
Many heroes of ancient Greece are related to the area, such as Jason and the Argonauts, Achilles, Asclepios (Aesculapius) and the Centaurs. Ruins and monuments exist from the neolithic age, to ancient times - such as a theatre where comedies and tragedies are performed at summer, to early Christian and Byzantine times.
The climate of Greece and of Pelion is typical mediterranean with mild and rainy winters, relatively warm and dry summers and, generally, extended periods of sunshine throughout most of the year. During the summer, the fresh sea breezes moderate temperatures at coastal areas.
